Our Journey of Growth, Innovation & Excellence

In the early 1970’s, armed with little more than his tools, determination, and the knowledge gained from his family business in Germany, Wolfgang Hutz arrived in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) with a clear vision — to build something meaningful. What began as a small light manufacturing company employing just six people was founded on a spirit of curiosity, craftsmanship, and the belief that quality work speaks for itself.

By 1985, under Mr Hutz’s dedicated guidance, the company expanded into the manufacturing of hospital equipment. In those early years, the range was modest, consisting of only two bedhead service system options — one horizontal and one vertical design. Yet even then, the foundation was being laid for what would become a trusted name in healthcare solutions. By 1990, the company had fully focused its expertise on hospital equipment manufacturing, setting a clear direction for the future.

The introduction of Theatre Control Panels in 1995 marked an exciting milestone, expanding the product range and reinforcing the company’s passion for innovation. As Hutz Medical’s Founder and Chairman once said:

“You must have fun when you start a business. You work things out in your mind…and then you get it made or make it yourself. That’s the fun – You can see it, you can touch it!” (Wolfgang Hutz: 2016)

As the business grew, so did the people behind it. A strong sense of belonging developed within the company, with employees proudly referring to themselves as the “Hutz Family”. Values such as loyalty, dedication, and pride became deeply rooted in the culture and continue to guide the organisation today.

Strong leadership has played an important role in sustaining this growth and stability. The appointment of Bernd Thurnher as Director for both Hutz Medical and Hutz Hospi-Tec in 2004, Julian Hutz as Director in 2008, Dr Jacky Rampedi as Director for Hospi-Tec in 2017, and Brad Naude as Financial Director for Hutz Medical in 2018, brought valuable expertise and vision to the Hutz Group. Under this leadership, the company has expanded its global reach, including the establishment of Hutz in France in 2014, further strengthening its international presence.

Over the years, the product range has evolved in response to the needs of modern healthcare environments. Pendant Service Systems were introduced in 2002, followed by Medical Lighting in 2006, significantly expanding the range of specialised solutions available. In 2018, Hutz Medical further broadened its offering with PSA Plants and Gas Reticulation systems for projects across Africa. Continuing its journey of innovation, a Digital Product Range was introduced in 2024, followed by Nurse Call Systems in 2025 — reflecting Hutz’s commitment to integrated healthcare solutions.

Quality, precision, and continuous improvement remain central to everything we do. This commitment is supported by internationally recognised certifications, including ISO 9001 (2004), ISO 13485, and the SAHPRA licence obtained in 2017. Hutz is also proud to be BBBEE compliant, reinforcing its commitment to responsible and sustainable growth within South Africa.

Today, the Hutz Family has grown to include more than 100 employees. More than just a workplace, Hutz remains a community of people united by shared values and a common purpose — to design, manufacture, and deliver solutions that support healthcare professionals in providing the best possible care.

From humble beginnings to a trusted partner in healthcare infrastructure, the passion to create, improve, and innovate continues to drive Hutz forward.
